President's Message

Welcome to the Viking Trail Tourism Association's website. The Viking Trail region, which stretches from Deer Lake to St. Anthony on the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, and from L'Anse au Clair to Battle Harbour in Southern Labrador, has something for everyone as you will see while surfing through these pages.

From the south to the north, we have many important natural and historical sites, including:

Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Port au Choix National Historic Site, where the remains of four ancient cultures have been found;
L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, where the first Europeans known to have arrived at North America made landfall. This site has also received UNESCO designation.
Red Bay National Historic Site in southern Labrador, site of a 16th century Basque whaling operation;
Battle Harbour National Historic Site in southeastern Labrador, which for years was the base of the lucrative Labrador fishery.

Those are just some of our major attractions. In addition, St. Anthony features the Grenfell Historic Properties, which tells the life of medical missionary Sir Wilfred Grenfell; the eastern side of the Northern Peninsula is home to whales, icebergs, and a number of picturesque communities, such as the logging town of Roddickton and the beautiful fishing villages of Conche, Croque and Englee.

The Straits-St. Barbe area is also home to many fishing communities and sites such as Bird Cove, where an ongoing archaeology project is uncovering important information about our early aboriginal cultures, and Shoal Cove East, where the region's role in developing products from seal skins is explained.

Throughout the Viking Trail there are many other sites, which are detailed in this website. But by far our most important resource is our people, some of the friendliest you will ever meet. Come and discover our region, our history, and our people, and when you return home tell your friends and family about the great time you had.

Enjoy your stay!!
