Bennett House

Nurse Myra Bennett was known as the "Florence Nightingale of the North" in
recognition of a lifetime of service to the residents of northern Newfoundland.
For more than half a century, this English nurse was the only medical aid along
the 320 km of Newfoundland’s rugged coastline. The British, Canadian and
Newfoundland governments acknowledged Myra Bennett’s dedication to nursing
and the people under her care with
the Medal of the British Empire, Coronation
Medals from King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada and
a Honourary Doctorate Degree in Science from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

The Nurse Myra Bennett Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mandate to
preserve and promote the life of Nurse Bennett. In 1999, the foundation restored
Nurse Bennett’s Daniel’s Harbour home, which was built in 1922. This two-storey
traditional house was home to Nurse Bennett for 68 years. In addition to Nurse
Bennett’s life of service, the Nurse Bennett Heritage House also pays tribute to outport
nursing throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The displays include the family home,
interpretive panels and the medical clinic. Season: June 18 - September 5.

Skinboot Church

A local minister who served the Straits area decades ago, Canon Richards,
knew his congregation needed a new church, but there was no money to pay
for it. So, he came up with an idea. Local residents were encouraged to make
and sell skinboots to pay for the church. Canon Richards was drawing upon
local expertise in the make of boots from sealskins and his idea provided a good
one, as several years later, the Skinboot Church, also known as St. Barnabas
Anglican Church, was completed. It is still used by the congregation today.
